Dental Implants how do they work?

From what i understand they're done in two steps.Firstly the screw is inserted into the jawbone and then about 3 months later the tooth is attached. Does this mean i have to walk around gummy in the meantime? (P.S. I still have my tooth but would like to replace it as its gone dark after root c treatment) Thx
