What is the temperment of a bull mastiff?

I just spent some time with a 17 mos old and she was so scared of everything. My friends didn't buy her until she was 7 mos. old. She had been kept in a barn by herself- the one that didn't sell. They are talking of breeding her, but I disagree because of her temperment. Does anyone own one that can give more info?
