Why do most ppl say bruce lee is a great fighter but he never fight to prove himself?

i check bruce fighting history and found that it wasn't great at all to be known the best.he have afew fights with unknown martial artist and amateurs but some ppl thought he was the greatest fighter.Is it because of his demos?his movies?
