Would you consider god to be the adult equivalent of santa clause?
Think about it. When you are a kid, you are told about santa. Someone who does exist but you can never see. He has magical powers and is capable of miracles. He sees everything you do and keeps a list of your actions. If you behave, you are rewarded (presents) and if you misbehave, you are punished (lump of coal and no presents). As you grow older and become more intelligent, and less naive, you come to realize that santa was a myth/lie told to you for various reasons. One of which was to control you and your actions. Fast foreward to adulthood. God. Same thing. Invisible man who you can never see. Capable of miraculous feats. Sees everything and keeps a list of everything you do in order to either reward you or punish you for your actions. Cannot be proven in any way whatsoever. Even offers his rewards in such as way as to insure his existence can never be proven (after death). Has never been seen by you, but a friend of a friend`s cousins uncle`s brother in law saw him once and swears its true, so you believe it. Not because of any empirical evidence, but because you want to, (it offers comfort) and you fear the punishment if you don't (eternal damnation). What an amazing tool this has been for those in power throughout history to control the mes. The people in power in religions understand the first rule of propaganda. People will believe anything as long as they either want to believe its true, or are afraid it could be. So, my question is, Would you consider god to be the adult equivalent of santa clause? And atheists are like the kids who first told you that santa wasn't real. You didn't want to listen to those kids because that means you parents lied to you, and a special part of your childhood was lost to knowledge of the truth.
